My name is JayGee. I was born and raised in Southside, Richmond Virginia. My given name at birth is Jonathan Berry. I was raised with both parents, an older brother and a younger sister. In my early years of growing up I had a normal life. I come from a big family and spent a lot time with my cousins.
It all started for me around 1984-85 when one of my older cousins, Shawn (Rip) introduced me and my brother to the music .
I got into the drug game in 6th grade and by 13 or 14 years old, I got kicked out of my parents house and moved in with my grandmother. I started rapping in middle school just freestyling in the bathroom.
I knew I wanted to be a rapper, but my head wasn’t in it back then. It took me getting kicked out of high school to take this music game seriously.
Pac was my favorite rapper. He had the biggest influence on me, the way he commanded the stage, the artistry, lyrics ,authenticity, his passion in his music and for his people. Pac made no apologies for who he was and stood in his words.
What I love most Hip Hop culture is…. is our freedom of expression, the influence we have in the entire entertainment industry, from fashion, to movies, marketing, and entrepreneurship. I mean, we have billionaires in the game now! That’s a huge statement!
I was with a group back in the day called Greater. Richmond. Thug. Committee. and we made buzz big around the city. However, I’m a solo artist now and my first project is called Winning Season Intro, that’s my baby! It gives an introduction of just who Jay Gee is.
It’s my story. I talk about my ups, my downs , my highs and my lows. It’s important to talk your pain and trials as well as celebrate your victories.
Depending on how I’m feeling in that moment , what I’m going through, have gone through or what I’m doing determines my creative process. It allows me to come up with a tight verse, lyrics, hook and or song. Speaking of, I have a certified banger for the ladies but also the fellas can definitely relate to it , dropping this Summer of 2022. So get ready!!! This one is going to be classic!
I have definitely grown more mentally than I have before in this process which has made me not only a better artist, but a better man.
